Travel in Beijing

Proposed Itinerary:

06 Aug

Arrive Beijing. Meet at Beijing Airport and transfer to Hotel.

07 Aug

After breakfast in the morning, you will be taken to Tiananmen Square (Picture 1). You will be amazed at the shear size of the square - during the Cultural Revolution Chairman Mao reviewed parades of up to a million people marching in the square. Surrounding the square is the Tiananmen Gate (or Gate of Heavenly Peace), the History Museum & Museum of the Revolution, the Great Hall of the people, the Monument to the Peoples Heroes and the Mausoleum of Mao Zedong.

Then you will continue to the awesome Forbidden City (Picture 2), so called because it was off limits to commoners for 5 years. It is the largest and best preserved cluster of ancient buildings in China, and the home to two dynasties of emperors—the Ming and the Qing - who didn’t stray from this pleasure dome unless they absolutely had to. 200 years ago, the admission price would have been instant death, but today you can wander around the grounds at your leisure.

In the afternoon, if time permit, tyou will visit the Temple of Heaven (Picture 3).- a place where the earthly ruler talks to the heavenly emperor. The temple, where dynastic rulers in China came to worship to heaven, with subsidiary buildings and a surrounding garden covers an area 5 times the size of the Forbidden City. This temple is an outstanding example of Chinese traditional architecture for its clever design and harmonious colours. After the tour, you will visit a Traditional Chinese Medicine & Health Care Centre. An experienced doctor will give a brief lecture on traditional Chinese medicine, & provide free treatment. You will enjoy the fantastic Acrobatic show (Picture 4) after dinner. (B, L, D)

After breakfast this morning you will first be taken to the Cloisonnee Factory. Cloisonnee is the most famous arts & Crafts in Beijing. It is made from copper and enamel. You will visit the factory and see the different work shops making Cloisonnee products. Then drive to the most exciting place in Beijing -- the Great Wall (Picture 5) of China which is about 70 kilometres northwest of Beijing. You will be taken to the Badaling section of the Great Wall, which is one of the best preserved part of the wall. Badaling is located at Yanqing County. In the history, the function of Badaling was to protect the Juyongguan Pass. Along with the gorge, there are several interesting and historic sites. Badaling is a rare ancient military defence project. The elevation is about 1,000 metres. The wall of Badaling has a total length of 3, 741 metres with an average height of 8 metres. The highest section is 15 meters. The total area for a tour is 19, 000 square meters. The top of the wall can permit five horses to be ridden abreast. There are arched doors at the inner side of the wall with very little distance between each two doors. The arched doors lead you to the top of the wall by stone stairs. Lunch will be provided whilst on the tour where we may see the Jade Factory.

On your way back to Beijing you will visit the beautiful Sacred Way  (Picture 6) (or Spirit Way) which is the road leading to the Ming Tombs where the Ming emperors were buried. This is 7 kilometres long and starts with a triumphal arch which passes through The Great Palace Gate, where officials had to dismount and pass a giant tortoise bearing the largest stele in China. This is followed by a guard of 12 sets of stone animals.

On the way back to Beijing city, we will stop at the National Stadium (so called “The Bird Nest) and make photos from outside. It may refresh your memory of the 2008 Olympic Games held in Beijing and you will see the beautiful buildings of the Olympic stadiums (Picture7).
