International Commission on Trichinellosis
Student Research Award
The International Commission on Trichinellosis wishes to encourage the career development of talented students by supporting and recognizing their contributions to research on Trichinella and trichinellosis. To do so, the ICT will make a Student Research Award for the best research paper submitted by a current, or recently graduated, student for presentation at the International Conference on Trichinellosis (ICT). Nominations and applications for the ICT Student Research Award may be made by research/thesis advisors, by professional colleagues familiar with the work of the nominee, or directly by the student.
The Award
The ICT will present the Student Research Award at the International Conference on Trichinellosis. The award will include a certificate signed by the President of the ICT, a monetary award, and travel (airfare, hotel, and registration) to attend the International Conference. The Student Research Award recipient will present his/her research during the Conference and will publish that research in the ICT Proceedings.
At the discretion of the selection committee one or two Honorable Mention Awards will be made and Honorable Mention recipients will have Conference registration waived.
Eligibility
The ICT Student Research Award competition is open to undergraduate and graduate students who are conducting, or have conducted, research on the subject of Trichinella or trichinellosis. Areas of study may include, but are not limited to: phylogeny; genetics; biology; immunology; detection and diagnosis of infection; epidemiology and control in animals; and, pathology, treatment and prevention in humans.
Certification of student status must be provided by the institution where the student conducted the research. While a nominee/applicant may have graduated at the time the award is made, he/she must not have graduated more than 12 months prior to the award application deadline. Thus, nominees/applicants for the 2011 ICT Student Research Award must not have received their degree prior to September 1, 2010.
Nomination Process
Nominations and applications for the ICT Student Research Award may be made by a research/thesis advisor, by a professional colleague familiar with the work of the nominee, or by the student. Nominations/applications must be submitted using the ICT Student Research Award nomination/application form (URL link). The nomination package must include the following:
- An extended abstract prepared by the student, describing his/her research#
- Three letters of support which discuss the quality and importance of the student’s research, the student’s other contributions to research on Trichinella and trichinellosis, and student’s potential for future contributions in the field
- A letter from the most recently attended university, certifying student status*
#: The extended abstract must include a title, a list of co-authors of the research and text including an introduction, materials and methods, results and discussion sections. Citations may be included in the text, but no references. The extended abstract should be single spaced and should not exceed two pages. If selected, this abstract will form the basis of the presentation and the manuscript that the student will prepare for the International Conference of Trichinellosis. Therefore, it is important that the research submitted be sufficiently complete so as to allow presentation and publication at the time of the International Conference (ICT-13 will be held in August, 2011).
*: Certification must show that the nominees/applicants did not receive their degree prior to September 1, 2010.
